Zonnebloem at a glance
Zonnebloem
Zonnebloem is a suburb steeped in history as it incorporates District 6 which is a well-known area that resulted in forced removals during the Apartheid regime when it was declared a 'whites only'area.
Today it is often referred to as the East City and has become a popular area with students and young professionals due its proximity to the city centre and the fact that it is home to the CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology) as well as hipster, cool bars, cafés and restaurants with Harrington Street fast becoming the new 'in' street giving Bree Street and Kloof Street a run for its money.
Shopping:
The close proximity to the city centre means there are plenty of shopping options from street retail stores to bigger shopping centres like Gardens Shopping Centre and Wembley Square, all within walking distance.
Schools:
The Cape Peninsula University of Technology has its main campus here and is probably the most well known of the education centres in the area although there are many primary and high school options as well including and not limited to:
- Zonnebloem girls and Zonnebloem Boys Primary
- Chapel Street Primary
- Harold Cressy High School
- Trafalgar High School
- Cape Town High School
Healthcare:
The Netcare Christiaan Barnard Hospital is in the centre of the City Bowl while the New Somerset Hospital and Cape Town Mediclinic present additional public and private healthcare treatments.
Dentists and specialists of all kinds are all in close proximity.
